Office website.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is
located in Greene County Virginia, just north of the City of Charlottesville,
Virginia. The population of Greene County was 18,404 (2010 Census report), and
encompasses 154 square miles. Within our county we have (1) High School
(William Monroe High), (1) Middle School (William Monroe Middle), (2)
Elementary Schools (Ruckersville & Nathaniel Greene) and (1) Primary School
(Greene Primary). We are home to many businesses to include a Super
Walmart, Lowes, Food Lion, Best Western, many Bed & Breakfast locations
throughout our scenic community and numerous fast food and family style
restaurants. We are an intersection for Highways 29 & 33 which
connects north and south as well as east and west, so it’s a community with
access to Interstates 64 & 81. We are also boarder by our National Forest
with an access point off of Route 33 to this national and local treasure at the
top of one of our mountains.
Personnel: The Greene County Sheriff’s Office
consist of 23 full-time sworn deputies to include the Sheriff, 2 full-time
sworn School Resource Officers, 12 part-time sworn deputies, 2 Animal Control
Officers, 3 Administrative Assistants, 2 Support Personnel and 12 E911
Emergency Communications Personnel.
Programs: Our agency is a community policing
agency, and is very pro-active within our community. We offer various community
based programs, such as TRAID, Project Lifesaver, D.A.R.E, CodeRed Community
Emergency Notification System,
National Night Out, R.A.D. Self Defense for Women, Hunters Education, Concealed Handgun Permit Training, and other Firearms
Safety Courses, Refuse To Be A Victim Seminars, Neighborhood Watch Program, Fingerprint Program for Children,
Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program for Kids, School Safety and Fund Raising Events, Resident instructional
talks/seminars, Home/Extra Patrol checks during vacation times, Traffic
Enforcement request and Children Safety Seat & Seat Belt Check
Program. We have (2) certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who can
assist parents in properly installing a child safety seat in a vehicle.
Duties: The Greene County Sheriff's Office is
responsible for providing primary law enforcement services to the citizens of
Greene County. The Law Enforcement Services consists of two primary
functions. The first being patrol, which is the backbone of
the agency. Deputies are tasked with answering calls for
service, investigating minor crimes, serving civil process, patrol and
traffic/DUI enforcement. The second being Investigations, the Investigative
side is tasked with the detailed and extensive follow-ups that are necessary
with serious crimes such as homicides, sexual assaults, grand larcenies and
narcotics within our jurisdiction.
The Sheriff's
Office additionally has deputies that have specialized training in search and rescue, (SWAT) Tactical Operations and Dive/Rapid Water rescue, plus many more.
The Sheriff is the responsible agent, by law for all ground search and
rescue incidents.
Courts: Greene County
has three courts. They are the Circuit, General District and Juvenile/Domestic
relations. The Sheriff is mandated to provide bailiffs for these three courts.
The Bailiff function is to provide physical security to the courtroom, assist
courtroom staff, litigants and the transport of prisoners to and from court
from our lock-up.
 The Sheriff’s Office has within its
office a lock-up that can hold prisoners for a maximum of 12
hours. Detainees that require a longer incarceration are transported to
the Central Virginia Regional Jail, which Greene County is a member county.
The Regional Jail is located in Orange VA. The Greene County
lock-up is certified by the Department of Corrections and undergoes routine
compliance reviews. The loc-up has enjoyed 100% compliance form D.O.C. for
several years.
