The Greene County Animal Shelter operates under guidelines from the Commonwealth of Virginia to temporarily house stray or injured animals, provide for adoption of as many animals as possible and to humanely follow procedures for euthanasia for unwanted animals. The Shelter strives to encourage, promote, and preserve responsible pet ownership and to prevent any form of cruelty to animals.
The Hours of Operation are:
Monday - Tuesday 10am - 2pm
Wednesday - Thursday Closed
Friday - 10am - 2pm
Saturday - 10am - 3pm
Sunday - Closed
Dogs and Cats over the age of four months must be vaccinated against rabies. In addition dogs need to be licensed, (fees listed below). Whereas cats in Greene County do not. Available at the Treasurer's Office, Dog and Kennel Licenses must be renewed by January 31st. A RABIES CERTIFICATE MUST BE PRESENTED before a license may be purchased. Information and payment windows for the Treasurer's Office are in Stanardsville, 36 Stanard Street, just to the left of the main court house.
